How To Save Your Sanity This Summer

6 Jun

I dream about my summer vacation all year long and think about how nice it will be to not have to drag myself out of bed every morning.  And then it gets here and I spend about a week at home working around the house and I’m over it.  I do like to sleep in a little later each day, but I start getting cabin fever pretty quickly.

This year I decided I was going to nip the cabin fever in the bud before I started to question my sanity. I looked around to find some fun stuff to do without spending a ton of money and thought I’d share what I’ve found so far.

Monday I took Bennett to story hour at our local library. It was completely free and included a snack and drink.  The kids listened to a story, got to see a real piece of construction equipment (which went with the book they read), and then broke into two teams to play a game. Here is a copy of the themes Munford Library will be following each week. image

Before we left the library, Bennett picked out a book to take home for the week. He chose The Lorax by Dr. Seuss because he loves the movie. So, the next day, we read the book, watched the movie, and then pulled out the paint and sketch paper to make our own Truffula trees.  He followed my lead and painted the whole thing by himself except the actual Lorax. He didn’t make it quite as far as I did, but he had a great time while we worked on them, so I think we’ll try to do some kind of activity with each book he checks out this summer.

Our local movie theater has teamed up with several sponsors to offer a free movie on Tuesdays and Wednesdays this summer. They are also offering a child’s drink and popcorn for $3, which is much more manageable than normal prices.  We went this Wednesday and have already snagged tickets to next week’s show as well. Here is a copy of the schedule for the movies at Atoka’s Cineplanet 16.

A friend reminded me about kidsbowlfree.com.  This program is offered across the country and offers registered kids two free games of bowling each day throughout the summer.  Shoe rental is not included, but only costs $2. You can also get a family pass for up to 4 adults for about $25. This allows each of the adults to play up to two free games per day with the children.  I think this is a steal!

Otherwise, I think our days will be filled with swimming with friends and play dates at the park.

Got any other summer sanity saving ideas? I’d love to hear them!

Weekend Wrap-up and Ugly Babies

18 Feb

Hey y’all! It’s Sunday night so I’m doing a weekend wrap-up, but wait the best part of this weekend is that it’s three days long thanks to a federal holiday. Woohoo! Gotta love a 3 day weekend.

I had a pretty relaxed weekend thanks to all the hard work my hubby has been doing at the house this week.  Instead of having loads of laundry and cleaning to catch up on, I was able to work on some other things.  Don’t get me wrong. There is still plenty of cleaning and organizing that could be done. They just aren’t necessities.

As I was leaving work Friday, I got a text from my future SIL. She let me know that her and my brother were in my neck of the woods and were headed my way.  I grabbed B and rushed home because we love those two and I knew B would be so excited to see them.  They came by and visited for a while before we all decided to go to dinner.  Chris didn’t join us because he was asleep when I got home.  Apparently working and keeping up with the house is hard work. Hmmm, interesting. Anyways, the four of us had a great time and still finished up in time for Bennett and me to go to Wal-mart for some baking supplies.

I came home and got to work on a small cake that I had only found out about earlier that morning. I went ahead and baked the whole thing and then went to bed so I wouldn’t be a zombie Saturday.  I got up the next morning and decorated the cake while Chris and B ran some errands so that Chris could spray yards for some people this weekend.

C and B passed out on me early again Saturday night, so I decided to hit up the gym. At least it wasn’t 10 pm this week. I went around 8 pm and realized that, yes, there are other people with no life on a Saturday night.

Today I got up and met my cousin Lora from Raising Steppe Sisters at a local park for a 4 mile walk/run.  We walked more than I think either of us had planned, but we got in some good talk time and still ran enough to burn close to 400 calories.

After knocking that out, I came home, cleaned up, and got to work planning out dinner for tonight. I ended up cooking white beans in the crock pot all day and making cabbage, fried chicken, and homemade peach cobbler with ice cream.  It was delicious, but definitely counteracted the 4 miles that I’d worked so hard on this morning.

Bennett and I ran to the Red Box and grabbed Hotel Transylvania and 21 Jump Street to watch on this lazy Sunday afternoon. His movie was cute, but I fell asleep just before the end. I turned on the latter for Chris and me after dinner and it was pretty funny. Why did it take Magic Mike to make me realize how cute Channing Tatum is?!?

So I saved the ugly babies for the end.  I knew you people wanted to hear what my heartless self was going to reveal about somebody else’s kid. It’s not like that at all. Before Bennett, I did always kinda hope that I wouldn’t have an ugly kid. I knew I would love my baby no matter what, just like those people I see walking around with ugly kids (just kidding but not really).  All kids are cute in their own ways, but some kids are just cuter than others. I’ll be the first one to admit when my kid is not having his most visually appealing day. Back to the ugly babies. When I was working on my cake Saturday, Chris and Bennett came inside and B was saying something about Klyde put a lock on the neighbor’s short dog. Bennett is terrified of the neighbor’s dogs so he was kind of excited thinking Klyde had put the smack down on one.

Our neighbors own two English bulldogs (like the Georgia bulldog, Uga is its name I think). I’m guessing they were planning on breeding them since they have two and had let their female go into heat, but they made the mistake of letting her out into an unfenced yard without a leash. I didn’t see it since I was working on the cake, but I’m thinking the purebred thing is out the window. I’ve thought and thought about the mix of these two dogs, Klyde with his tall, lanky body and long nose and that short, stumpy dog with a flat face.  The only thing I can think is that they’re going to have some weird looking hard headed puppies. Probably not as bad as my ex-boyfriend’s weanie dog and collie hooking up. Now those were some crazy looking babies. Oh well, needless to say, Klyde got a really good nap for the rest of the afternoon. Just like a man:)

Hope you guys have a great day off tomorrow, and if not, just think about us people that will have a really hard time getting back into the groove on Tuesday after an extra weekend day.
