4 Things I Love About Blogging

28 May

I started blogging on January 1st of this year. I decided to give it a try to help keep me accountable for sticking to goals that I set for myself.  Although the frequency of my posts varies, there are consistent reasons that I love blogging.

1) One of my original goals was to document more of our lives. I wanted to do a better job of keeping up with the things my family does and the amazingly fast growth process that Bennett is going through.  I’ve only been blogging for a few months, but I already love going back occasionally and reading a post or looking at some of the older pictures I’ve posted.  It is cheaper than printing a million pictures and allows me to describe the events in more detail than I would in a scrapbook.

2) Blogging has allowed me to make connections with friends and family, old and new. I’ve had old friends tell me they like reading my posts and keeping up with the things that we’re doing even though we don’t get to talk very much.  I’ve seen family members that we haven’t seen in years that say they read my posts to watch Bennett grow and change. I’ve also connected with new friends that either write their own blogs or just enjoy reading blogs.  Some of these women have given me good ideas, tips, and support which has been greatly appreciated.

3) Who can pass up cheap therapy? Sometimes I just feel better after sitting down and putting my thoughts out there. I’ve told you I’m very social, but every now and then I just need to vent without getting tons of feedback. Typing out these posts allows me to think things through and really wrap my mind around them.

4) This last thing really hit me today. I’ve been way off of my routine with eating and working out and after taking the time to catch up on my blog reading, I feel inspired to get out there and get back to it.  I’ve looked up some new recipes to try this summer while I’m off and I’m just waiting on sunset to hit the pavement. This is one of my favorite things about blogging, knowing I can jump on the Internet at any time and read tons of motivating women’s stories.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging or reading blogs?

Another Weekend for the Books

22 Apr

Ahhhhh!  That’s the sound of my sigh of relief because another Monday has come and (almost) gone.  Only four more of my least favorite day of the week and I’ll be off work for the summer.  Woohoo!

We had a cram packed weekend that didn’t slow down until we took what has to be a record-setting nap yesterday afternoon.

Friday started early with a trip to Walmart at 3:00 am so that I could pick up ingredients for a set of  birthday cupcakes.  After school, I finished and delivered the treats and then rushed home to eat dinner with Chris and Bennett before C headed out of town for a work and hunting trip.  We enjoyed this dinner with an action packed show as the Boston PD hunted down the low down dog that bombed the marathon.

After Chris left, Bennett and I met a couple of my friends at a local Mexican restaurant and visited while they ate.  I couldn’t resist a jumbo Dos Equis while we chatted.

Saturday morning came early as I had to get to Covington around 7:30 or so to register for the Go Lucy Go 5K.  I am very indecisive and, by the time I made up my mind to run on Friday afternoon, the online registration had closed.  Bennett was adamant that he wanted to “run” the race with me, so I packed up the stroller and tons of warm clothes and hit the road.

I thought it was going to be cold, but it turned out to be a gorgeous day.  There were tons of people from Tipton County that I knew and it was an exhilarating feeling to know that so many people had turned out to help raise money for such a great cause.

Bennett and I before the race (Can you tell he didn’t want to take a picture?)

A family affair: My cousin Lora (from Raising Steppe Sisters), one of her twins (I think Alex), my cousin Audrey, Bennett, and myself

I’m not a very fast runner and normally don’t push a stroller, but I pulled out a better than expected time with about 34:30.  That was one hilly course and, needless to say, my buns were sore the next day.

There was a kid’s fun run that (I think) was about 1/2 mile and a race for the smaller kids that covered about 3/4 of the track around the CHS football field.  Bennett decided he wanted to run this, which surprised me considering he didn’t know anyone else that was doing it.   We had just talked about the importance of trying your best, regardless of whether you were going to win or lose, on the way down there.  He did a great job and finished just about in the middle of twenty or so kids.  I was super proud of him since we just had the little incident with last week’s baseball game.

Run, Bennett, Run (in my best Forrest Gump voice)

I also saw several  Memphis bloggers and enjoyed talking to them before and after the race.

It was great seeing Meredith, Janessa, Laura, Lora, and Laura!

After the race, Bennett and I headed home so I could begin working on a baby shower cake that I had to have finished by Sunday afternoon.  I didn’t have much time because Janessa’s daughter’s competitive softball team was having a Bunco fundraiser and I had talked my friend Wendy into going with me.

I got the first Big Bunco of the night and the privilege of wearing this lovely crown

We had a great time and decided to keep it up by heading to Chili’s with the gift card that Wendy won for getting the most Big Buncos.

I woke up bright and early Sunday morning to finish off the baby shower cake and completed it just in time to deliver it.  Bennett and I then came home to clean up the kitchen before Chris got home.  The three of us ate a quick snack and then napped until late last night, at which point we ate another snack and hit the hay for the night.  I’m guessing we were all worn out from the busy weekend (and that all those snacks just before sleeping will not help my weigh-in this week).

One of the last things to happen just before we went to bed cracked me up enough that I had to text Lora and fill her in.  I guess I always say “Kate n’ Alex” when I’m talking about her twins. So when Bennett was telling Chris all about the fun he had at the 5K, he told him that “Katen” had taken him to the bounce house.  When I asked him who he was talking about, he said “You know Katen and Alex, the girls who look alike.”  I thought this was hilarious.  I just love the way a child’s mind works!

The Power of Planning + Wednesday Weigh-in

13 Mar

I know it’s Wednesday, but I guess my mind and body are craving Friday because this morning when I put Bennett on the bus I told his driver and assistant to have a good weekend.  Guess I jumped the gun a little…bummer!

I’m linking up with Erin and Alex for my weigh-in again this week and I must say that this week was much more successful than last week, which surprised the heck out of me. I was happy with losing that 1/2 pound last week, but that’s not really going to get me where I want to be in time for shorts and bikinis.  It definitely kicked me back into gear.

This has been a challenging week.  Why?  Because I wasn’t prepared.

Goal Fail

I didn’t go to the grocery store because I had a small amount of many ingredients and I was trying to use them up.  So, my ingredients were a little random and very scarce.  I didn’t have any “healthy snacks” which ended up being the thing that harmed me in the long run.

I would dig through the refrigerator looking for ingredients to throw into a smoothie that wouldn’t push me over my sugar and calorie count for the day.  Instead of eating fruits, veges, soy crisps, and protein bars as a snack, I dove into the boys’ chips and trail mix.  Since I was eating a decent breakfast and lunch, I was starving by the time I got home.  I didn’t have any meals planned out so getting dinner going took so long that I couldn’t wait.  I really felt like I was not going to have good results this week, but  I was happy to see a 2 1/2 pound loss when I got on the scale this morning.  That brings me to a grand total of 12 1/2 pounds since the end of January!

Goal Wish

Even though my results for the week were great, I still think I need to come up with a plan to keep the bad choices from this week from happening again.

Goal Start

My Plan for a Plan:

1.  Check the weekly ads and any coupons I have for deals that I want to grab up each week.  Check the grocery store on days when foods are marked down to Manager’s Special (found a great piece of salmon last night for about $3.00).

2.  Make a menu for the week so that I have an idea of what meals I’m prepared to cook.  Plan for the nights that I KNOW I won’t want to cook (late nights at work or days that I have to go in early).

3.  Make sure to have snacks at work so that I’m not tempted to eat something that’s less than healthy.

4.  Have any meats that I’ll be cooking thawed to cut down on prep time.

5.  Have a general idea what nights/mornings I will be working out.  Always shoot for 4  and hope to get in more.

Hopefully, if I follow these steps, I’ll have a better chance of being successful.

Have you ever failed at something because you weren’t prepared?  Do you plan anything to help with your diet success?

Wanting Wardrobe Changes + Weigh-in Wednesday

27 Feb

It’s that time again folks! Weigh-in Wednesday…and time to make some wardrobe changes.

I’m linking up with Erin and Alex again to share this week’s results.  Head on over to see some other ladies’ results.

I have been pretty good this week.  I haven’t been super strict on myself, but when I do give in, I’ve handled the freedom with some restraint.  I’m not gonna lie.  I have had a couple of rough moments, but then again I’ve stayed strong at times when I was ready to cave.  After work Monday, I had to run to the grocery store to grab some cake ingredients and by the time I made it out, I didn’t feel like cooking.  I ran to KFC to grab the boys some chicken, slaw, and macaroni and, instead of just ordering the same for myself, I ordered a grilled breast.  I went home, made some spinach for my side, and saved half the breast for lunch the next day.  Pretty good, huh?  Well, then I commenced to attacking Chris’s trail mix.  It was not so pretty.

I have not been to the gym in over a week, but I have continued to run outside and I’ve been doing Jillian’s 30 Day Shred.  I am attempting to rise to the challenge of doing 30DS for 30 days in row.  Lora and Kimmy have put this one out there for everybody on Instagram and I am trying to rise to the occasion.  I already flaked out on Monday, but since I started on Saturday, I figured I could count it as flaking on day 3 instead of 2.  It just sounds a little less weak that way.  Thankfully, Lora told me to get off my rump and get to work.  I didn’t listen that night, but it did encourage me to move on to level 2 the next morning.  Level 2 was horrible and fantastic all at the same time.  Tough stuff!!!

I was pleased with my weigh-in this morning.  I was down another pound and a half from last Wednesday.  That makes a total of 9 1/2 pounds since the end of January!

I posted a picture on IG this morning since I was in a pretty good mood after the weigh-in. I didn’t get a chance to workout this morning, but I had been up since 2:30 working on a cake for someone’s 21st birthday.  You can tell by the hideous hair onmy head.  If your not following me already, find me @jaimebyram.  There’s no telling what I might get into.

Now for the wardrobe change…

It’s not what you’re probably thinking.  Of course, I would love to tell you I’m ready to run out and grab a whole new set of clothes because the pounds I’ve lost have left my clothes too big, but that’s just not the case. I am just now really getting comfortable in my clothes again.  I still have at least four more clothing sizes stocked up in my closet.

The wardrobe change I’m ready for is the switch from fall/winter to spring/summer.  Our weather was gorgeous Saturday and has since moved on to cold, dreary, and depressing.

I’m ready to go from this…

Fall 2

To this…

Spring 1

summer dress

And from this…

To this…

Are you ready for a wardrobe change?  What is the item you’re ready to wear the most?

Emotional Rollercoaster + Wednesday Weigh-in

20 Feb

Hang on tight! I’m about to take you for a ride on today’s emotional rollercoaster.

Down:  My alarm went off at 4:00 am.

Up:  I only pushed snooze one time before I decided to get my lazy tail out of bed.

Down: My nose started bleeding during my run because it was so freaking cold outside.

Up:  I finished my mile in a pretty quick time even though Klyde stopped to do the doo twice.

Down:  Jillian taught me that I absolutely hate lunges, and even though I can run for 30 minutes straight, she can make me want to give up after 2 minutes of cardio.

Exercise ecard

Up:  I finished Jillian’s 30 Day Dead Shred for the day.

Down:  My legs are so sore I had to touch the edge of the toilet seat with the heel of my hand to ease myself down.

Up:  It’s because I’m (literally) working my tail off.

Down:  It’s Wednesday and I realized that the major amount of popcorn and homemade peach cobbler I ate Sunday reversed a lot of the exercise I had done all week.

Up:  I still lost one pound.

Down:  I have been working out for a little over a month and I am just back to where I started two years ago.

Motivational Quote Big Star

Stole this from Erin.  Loved it!  Hope she doesn’t mind:)

Up:  I’m down 8 pounds since the end of January and I feel super motivated to keep going!

What kind of ups and downs have you had this week?

I’m linking up with Erin and Alex for Wednesday Weigh-in.  Go check them out.

Presidential Playdates

19 Feb

Today was the closer to our 3 day weekend. That’s ok though because Bennett and I packed it full of fun and friends.  It works out perfectly that two of my best friends have boys who are some of B’s best friends and the moms just so happen to be another teacher who has the same schedule as me and a nurse that works the weekend night shift.

I woke up bright and early this morning at around 6:30. This isn’t my typical bright and early, but it is for a day off.  Bennett slept in until around 8:00 so I had time to sip a couple cups of coffee and do some major pinning on one of my favorite websites Pinterest.  I found a good recipe for an easy and nutritious breakfast, which I will be sharing tomorrow.

I realized that my friend Ashley, who is one of my oldest and dearest friends and was my maid of honor, had liked my blog post from last night on Facebook so she must be another crazy teacher that woke up early on her day off. I sent her a message to see if she’d like to get the boys together for some playtime .

Once she finished her grocery shopping and my little lazy bones rose from the dead, she headed over with her hilarious son. He has loved B’s toy guitar since B’s birthday party last April and he had not forgotten because as soon as he walked in the door, he exclaimed, “Can I play your rock guitar Bennett?” That is just what he did. He rocked out a lot while they were here visiting. The boys had a great time and Ashley and I had time to catch up and share some of our diet and exercise successes since she is on the mission as well. She also brought over her copy of Jillian’s 30 Day Shred for me to borrow.  I was super excited because I have seen tons of people talking about Jillian and her sweatfest.

After they left, Bennett and I scored some lunch in the form of leftovers. I cleaned up, did a bit of laundry, and soon received a text from my friend Jennifer, who had just woken up after her last late night shift of the weekend. She is married to one of the guys I grew up with and is what I like to think of as an inherited friend because we met through her hubs and became fast friends. I just love spending time with her. We had planned on meeting at a park so we could walk and the boys could play, but by then it had started to rain. We decided it would be less cleanup for everyone if we just met at McDonald’s and let the boys run wild for a little while.

This turned out to be a wonderful idea. The boys had a great time playing with each other and many other children who were also enjoying the indoor playground. J caught me up on her recent vacation and showed me a recipe book that she is currently using on her mission. It was a Hungry Girl cookbook (sorry I don’t remember the exact name) and featured hundreds of yummy recipes for under 350 calories.  I took a couple of pictures with my phone so I could try some of the recipes.

A few that caught my eye:

Ragin’ Cajun Shrimp 226 calories

Nutty Caramel-Coated Sticky Buns (which she said are wonderful) 169 calories

Shrimpylicious Egg Rolls 99 calories

The Crab Rangoonies 140 Calories

Spicy Bacon-Stuffed Cheesy Mushrooms 53 calories

There were tons of recipes for every meal and course. I’ve tried one of this author’s recipes from a magazine before and loved it so I can’t wait to get to work on some of these. I’ll let you know how they turn out.

After we came home, I got to work on some tacos using ground turkey. My husband was not thrilled that I “forced” him into this healthy choice, but he did eat one hard and one soft taco with no more complaints. I ate mine as a taco salad, heavy on the salad and free of the shells and tortillas.

Next, I busted out the new Jillian DVD and got to work. That woman is not playing. The 20 minute workout was tough but not too long. I was really glad that she didn’t yell at me though because she scares me on t.v.

Anywho, sorry about this lllooonnnggg post, but it was a pretty good day and I felt like sharing. I will be hitting the sack after this as I attempt to start tomorrow off with a 4am run before early duty. Hope you have a good rest of the week.

My Fitness Pals + Weigh-in Wednesday

13 Feb

Hey there people!  It’s Wednesday and you know that means.  Weigh Day!  This could be a good or a bad thing, so it’s a little scary, but it is always something to look forward to since it reminds me of how hard I’ve worked that week or not.  I’m linking up with Erin and Alex to share my results of this week’s weigh-in.  When you finish checking out my results, head on over to see some of the other awesome results.

We all know that it’s easier to accomplish your fitness goals with a little love and support.  As far as support is concerned, my motto is “the more, the merrier”.  This week I decided to fill you in on some of My Fitness Pals that are aiding me in my goal for perfection a healthy lifestyle.

Up first is my hubby.  I’ve told you that we’re brutally honest with each other.  No, he is not on the health wagon with me, but he does support me and will tell me things that I don’t even think I want to hear.  Even if I don’t want to hear things like “Is that cookie on your diet?”, I know that it helps me during my weak moments.  He’s not mean about it, but he knows that I want to hear it, even if I grumble and get a little rude about it at that moment when I am about to overindulge.

Next up is you guys.  It helps me a lot knowing that I’m going to be posting this info for millions a couple of people to read.  I’m working hard and I like to hear encouragement from others, whether it be in real life or on the web.

I’ve also been searching for some yummy alternatives to the fattening things that I was consuming prior to the start of my journey.  I have tried to cut out many things that I love such as breads, potatoes, pastas, and sweets.  It’s also important that I find foods that can fit comfortably into my schedule.  I don’t have time to slave away in the kitchen for hours every day.  My friend Melissa told me about a protein bar that she found with a small amount of sugar and a calorie count that wouldn’t break through my daily limit.  I also discovered this delicious almond butter that I love to eat with an apple.  It isn’t that bad for you and helps cure my craving for sugar.

I have tried to change up my salad toppings so that I don’t get bored of the combos.  Today I’m eating a salad with crab meat, parmesan cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette.  I love the combination of the sweet crab with the tangy dressing.

We are trying to cook more and eat out less.  One tool that I’m using for this is my trusty crock pot.  I always struggled with crock pot recipes that asked me to cook things for 6-8 hours because I am gone from the house fro longer periods than that each day.  My friend Angela helped me with this obstacle by giving me an awesome crock pot with a timer for my birthday.  I can set the time and temp and when it’s done, it goes into warming mode for several more hours.

Crock pot

The title of my post is inspired by my next tool.  My Fitness Pal is an app that I’ve talked about a couple of other times.  I have been using it faithfully to log my food and exercise.  It does a great job of helping me get a visual of what I am taking in and putting out.

It has lots of tools to help you see the breakdown of your daily and weekly totals and your weight loss progress.  I know some of you may be thinking I’m eating nothing, but I forgot to finish logging last Monday, and when you log your exercise, it subtracts it from your calorie intake.

The last fitness pal that I wanted to mention is Klyde, my dog.  He is my buddy.  He is a workout partner that is almost always up for a run.  He will get up early with me or stay out late with me.  I say “almost” because he pooped out on me yesterday morning about 1/4 of a mile into my third mile.  He never complains and he doesn’t mind my awful singing voice.

Klyde 2

I worked very hard this week to stay on track and even managed a two-a-day workout yesterday.  Since last Wednesday, I am officially down 2 more pounds!  I am super excited about this and can’t wait to continue the journey.  Klyde was even so proud of me that he gave me a five.
